“Was someone going to tell me we’re in the middle of a supply-chain crisis?” Ranell demanded angrily at the morning synch meeting the next day.
“We thought you already knew,” Larbonne seemed hurt by the accusation. “We discussed MMT yesterday.”
“What’s that got to do with farmers blocking the freeways?” Ranell was fuming. “My wife and I were forced to eat top ramen last night to celebrate the Lockheed Martin contract!”
“You can't blame the farmers, Josef,” a dangerous light gleamed deep within Anderson's half-lidded eyes. “The government made good on a threat to cut off crop insurance unless the major agricultural institutions adopted their centralized digital currency.”
“What does digital currency have to do with MMT?” Ranell pressed his fingers to the bottom of a cardboard box sitting on the conference table, picking up donut crumbs with his fingers. He was starving. To make matters worse, they were out of coffee.
“That’s how they get the ‘unlimited’ money supply you were bragging about yesterday,” Anderson leaned forward, tapping his finger on the table to emphasize his point. “You make everybody go digital, and then you can increase the entire US money supply with just a few keystrokes. I can’t begin to tell you what a crazy idea this is! Prices of everything are going to skyrocket. In fact, it’s already started.”
Ranell massaged his temples. GML operations consisted of transportation assets strategically operating at locations throughout the world. His one great talent was his extraordinary ability to imagine the complex interrelationships of international supply chains. That’s how he’d become the Chief Logistics Officer. He was quiet for a long moment as he employed this ability now. Then, he looked up suddenly. “Is this protest a just local phenomenon here in California? What’s the scale of the problem?”
“National,” Larbonne replied, his frown deepening.
“Probably global, Josef.” There was that dark look in Anderson’s eyes again. “You know it’s all tied together.”
“What’s GML’s exposure?”
“The move to crypto is causing massive inflation,” Anderson growled, “fuel, parts, labor, port fees, everything is going up.”
