Ranell thought he might be able to calm his friend down by talking about the downsizing process, the timelines involved, and the severance package. He was wrong.
Stass' eyes narrowed as he stared at Ranell. “And you just happened to be the messenger?” Histone was accusing. “I don’t see GML eliminating your position. Who made this decision?”
Ranell didn't flinch. “I’m sure you can appreciate what a difficult decision this was, Ken. But I want to assure you that we will do everything we can to support you during this transition. We'll provide you with a severance package and assistance with finding new employment.”
Stass scoffed. “A severance package? That's supposed to make up for the fact that eliminating my whole department?”
Ranell leaned forward in his chair, his hands clasped tightly together on his desk. He could feel the tension in the room and the anger emanating from Stass. “I’m sorry, Ken. But it’s out of my hands,” he said, his voice low and calm. “The company is going in a different direction, and unfortunately, what I can do right now is help answer any questions you might have about the process.”
“Don’t give me this crap!” Stass swiped the table violently, scattering files and papers across the floor. “I can't believe you would do this to me, Josef. You, of all people!”
Stass made to storm out of the office, but as he reached the door, he turned and looked back. “Now I wish they had pulled you out of your car and beaten you. You’d have gotten what you deserve. No jobs, no justice!” He left, slamming the door behind him.
