The newsfeed continued, “A Carrier Strike Group is a Navy formation normally consisting of an aircraft carrier, at least one cruiser, a destroyer squadron, and a carrier air wing with sixty-five to seventy aircraft.”
There was a rush of confusion as the anchor’s co-host scrambled into the scene to take her place beside him. She briefly covered her microphone and whispered to the anchor. His face grayed visibly, and he nodded his head.
The co-host picked up the story. “This just in: Tonight, Action News can confirm that elements of the Chinese People's Liberation Army have fired upon the USS Theodore Roosevelt Strike Group. Our State Department sources confirm that three warships encountered near misses, and one logistics ship was severely damaged.”
“What’s the US response, Kelly?” asked the anchor.
“State Department officials are telling us that the full spectrum of military countermeasures are being deployed to counteract the threat of Chinese missile strikes,” she replied. “But at this time, it remains unclear what specific steps the Navy is taking.”
