Over the next few weeks, Juan learned a lot about the American election process. Not the one you learn about in the patriotic classes they teach in preparation for becoming a US citizen, but the real, street-level actions and activities that make elections possible.
He learned how to get involved, and he learned that most Americans never get involved. So that set him apart in some ways. It gave him a greater perspective than that shared by other members of his family and community.
More than that, he learned that he was good at it. There was something about meeting all the diverse people and discussing the political topics of the day that suited his intrinsic nature. He loved meeting people with differing opinions, and as his knowledge of current issues grew, he loved trying to persuade people to see things from his perspective.
However, the shadow of Tio Pablo cast a pall over everything Juan saw now. He couldn’t help but consider the possibility that dark forces were at work everywhere. And once his eyes were opened, he knew he could never un-see what had been revealed.
